Two approaches to speech intelligibility#

Acouso-ROOM provides two approaches to estimating speech intelligibility.

Room Analysis — statistical STI potential#

A screening estimate derived from octave-band reverberation times, assuming an idealised exponential decay and quiet conditions. The reverberation-only relationship below describes the basis of this calculation.

Illustrative reverberation-only modulation transfer

This relationship describes modulation loss caused by an idealised exponential reverberant decay under quiet conditions. It forms part of the statistical STI-potential calculation.

m
Modulation transfer (dimensionless)
fₘ
Modulation frequency, distinct from the acoustic octave-band frequency (Hz)
T₆₀
Band reverberation time (s)

Acoustic Ray Analysis — receiver-based STI estimate#

A separate calculation based on the predicted sound-energy response at each listening position, using modulation-transfer principles described in IEC 60268-16. It evaluates the timing and distribution of arriving energy and incorporates the selected background-noise scenario where specified.

Calculation assumptions and limitations
