Diffuse-field critical distance

Critical distance estimates where direct and diffuse reverberant levels are equal. Room Analysis uses Q = 1 for the reference case.

r_c
Statistical critical distance (m)
Q
Directivity factor; one for the reported reference case (dimensionless)
V
Effective analysis volume (m³)
T₆₀
Statistical reverberation time (s)

H. Kuttruff and M. Vorländer (2024), Room Acoustics, seventh edition.

Critical distance estimates where direct and diffuse reverberant levels are equal. Room Analysis uses Q = 1 for this reference calculation, rather than the directivity of a selected ray source. The ROOM interface lets you select Q to adjust the displayed treated and untreated estimates without changing the stored Q = 1 reference. It does not locate an exact boundary in a non-diffuse room.
