Integrating Acoustics in Revit: Live BIM Data and Acoustic Mark-ups
In a virtual presentation for the Institute of Acoustics Middle East Branch, Acouso founder Joshua Winning demonstrated how live Revit data can become reviewable acoustic requirements, compliance mark-ups, and room-acoustic feedback across a project-scale model.

Bringing acoustics into the design environment
The Institute of Acoustics session, held on 21 August 2026, explored a practical question: if the decisions that shape acoustic performance are made in the building model, why should the acoustic workflow remain disconnected from it?
Joshua showed how Acouso uses the live Revit model to connect room information, acoustic criteria, analysis results, and coordinated mark-ups. This gives acoustic engineers and design teams a shared view of performance while the project is still developing.
The model carries the inputs. The engineer carries the judgement.
From BIM data to acoustic information
A BIM model brings together rooms, geometry, constructions, materials, and the relationships between spaces. Acouso connects that structured project information with acoustic criteria and performance data, keeping the analysis tied to the model the project team is already using.
Within the workflow, room uses and project criteria can be reviewed before analysis. The resulting requirements and design feedback are then returned to Revit, where they remain connected to the rooms and building elements they describe.
- Read room, construction, material, and adjacency information from the live model.
- Apply the selected acoustic criteria consistently across the project.
- Return requirements and visual feedback directly to the Revit environment.
Acouso-PLAN across a 92-room building
The centrepiece of the presentation was an Acouso-PLAN demonstration using a three-level, 92-room Revit model. Acouso-PLAN analysed the project and produced acoustic mark-ups across the building, making room and partition information visible in the context of the design.
The sequence moves from the acoustic requirements associated with the spaces to a clear project-wide view of the current design. Instead of coordinating a separate static mark-up, the information is shown on the plans where the rooms, walls, and design decisions already live.
Design feedback that keeps pace
The value of model-connected analysis becomes clearest when the design changes. A room use, construction, or finish can be reconsidered and the acoustic effect reviewed in the same environment, without rebuilding the project in a separate tool.
During the presentation, Joshua followed a room from an identified acoustic issue through to a coordinated ceiling treatment. The updated result was reflected directly in the model, turning analysis into an active design conversation rather than a downstream reporting exercise.
Exploring geometrical acoustics with Acouso-ROOM
The session also demonstrated geometrical acoustic analysis with Acouso-ROOM operating on the Revit model itself. Sources and receivers are positioned within the room, with reflection paths and acoustic results shown alongside the building geometry.
This makes sound propagation easier to explore spatially. Energy and clarity can be viewed in relation to the room, its surfaces, and the design team's familiar plan and 3D views.
Moving acoustic judgement closer to the decision
Bringing acoustic information into Revit changes when it can contribute. Project teams can consider acoustic requirements during layout, test construction and material decisions during design development, and coordinate feedback in the same model used by the wider team.
For acoustic engineers, the opportunity is to spend less time reconstructing project information and more time applying expertise: interpreting results, developing practical design responses, and helping teams make better decisions earlier.
